Applying the Strategy Planner in your strategy development workflow

Depending on your organization’s goals, there are a variety of strategic planning models your organization can follow to achieve its business goals. On the whole, these strategic planning models generally align with the following stages:

Standard strategy planning process

Platform integration with the strategy planning process

Based on the simplified outline above, the QFP can facilitate elements of this planning process in the following ways:

  • What are your organization’s goals or objectives?
  • What is the vision it is trying to pursue?
  • What are the issues or challenges it is trying to solve?
  • What are the organization’s strengths and the resources at its disposal? SWOT, financial review, etc.
    • What is the current state of the environment in which the organization operates, in all contexts?
    • What are the potential future states of the environment in which the organization operates, in all contexts?
  • What information/data does the organization need to know to make informed decisions about its future operations and goals?
  • Of the insights collected in the previous phase, how should they be prioritized in terms of impact to the organization?
  • Of the insights collected in the previous phase, how should they be prioritized in terms of urgency to the organization? Which insights should be planned for immediately, in the medium-term and the long-term?
  • Brainstorm actions that can be implemented to address the opportunities and challenges that the organization prioritizes.
  • Secure input and approval from the necessary stakeholders on the actions to implement.
  • Approve an actionable strategic roadmap for the organization or individual initiatives.
  • Assign responsibility for the execution of individual elements of the approved strategy.
  • Apply organizational resources to the strategy’s execution.
  • Decide what metrics will be used to measure the progress and success of approved actions against stated objectives.
  • Build management and communication systems to facilitate the execution of various elements of the strategy.
  • Initiate early, real-world tests and use the findings to continually refine or iterate elements of the strategy’s execution.
  • Schedule periodic dates to reassess the overall strategy.
