It can be challenging to create a treatment plan for depression. This is especially true for patients who aren't responding to conventional treatments and are undergoing experimental therapies such as deep brain stimulation. For most medical conditions, doctors can directly measure the part of the body that is being treated, such as blood pressure for cardiovascular disease.

Legalizing medical marijuana is associated with a "lower frequency" of nonprescribed pharmaceutical opioid use, according to a study published this month in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction. While the decrease was rather small—between about 0.6 percent and 1.5 percent for regular to frequent opioid use—and was concentrated in people who met diagnostic criteria for cannabis use disorder, the researchers said it could signal "substitution effects with partial replacement of opioids by cannabis." The research team, from the schools of public health at Rutgers and Columbia universities as well as the University of Arizona's School of Government and Public Policy, said the results highlight "the importance of identifying tradeoffs of cannabis legalization as an intervention to reduce opioid-related harms." The study used national survey data from 2004 to 2014 to examine nonmedical prescription opioid (NMPO) use—specifically, prescription opioids used without a prescription or in a manner other than prescribed.

Neuralink, the biotechnology company founded by Elon Musk, has received approval from the U.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to commence human trials of its implantable brain-computer interface device. Recruitment for the clinical trial has not yet started. The Neuralink device is approximately the size of a coin, measuring about 23 mm x 8 mm. The implant includes several chips, a battery, and other electronic components. Threads thinner than a human hair protrude directly from the device and go directly into the brain.

The latest data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that health insurance prices have experienced their highest yearly increase since 2005, rising 28.2% from September 2021 to September 2022. The pandemic and associated healthcare expenses are thought to be a major factor in driving up costs for insurers and ultimately for policy holders. While there may be a correction towards the end of the year, consulting firm Mercer predicts continued increases in health insurance premiums in the coming year, particularly for employer-based coverage.
