This treatment has proven successful for some patients with very advanced cancer or in cases where other treatments failed. The personalized nature of CAR T-cell therapy requires the use of companion diagnostics (CDx) — devices that detect specific biomarkers — to determine whether someone is a candidate for the therapy, since it can cause serious adverse events in patients for whom the therapy is not designed.
