Recently, a group of researchers found that a popular AI software called CLIP was biased against black people and women. The software has been used in many AI research projects, including robots. The researchers believe that the source of the bias is CLIP, which was trained using millions of images and text captions scraped from the web. They propose several ways to prevent the proliferation of prejudiced machines, including changing the definition of success. Maynard Holliday, deputy CTO for critical technologies at the US Department of Defense, says that the results speak to the need to ensure that people who build AI systems and assemble the datasets used to train AI models come from diverse backgrounds. As the world's leading manufacturer of industrial robots, China is rapidly increasing its lead over other countries. With 243,000 robot installations in 2020, China has almost half of all the industrial robots in the world. The Chinese government is committed to making China a world leader in robot technology and industrial automation, and it appears to be succeeding. In just 10 years, China has gone from 10 robots per ten thousand employees to 246 robots per ten thousand employees. To keep the robots state-of-the-art and operational, the Chinese Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security introduced 18 new occupational titles in June, including "robotics engineering technician."
